CANDY COVERED BOOKS

January 15, 2005

Hey Sugars,

We hope you all had a nice holiday. We sure did. So, back to the business at hand: Chick Lit? Where to start or how to branch out? With increasing number of subgenre ranging from Mommy Lit, Baby Lit, Lad Lit, Christian Lit...aaaa! too many Lits! How to find out which Chick Lit reading to try next? In a wildly developing genre, here's some basic Chick Lit 101. The term "Chick Lit" was coined in the wake of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones Diary huge success in the late nineties. Straight from the UK to the US soon pink and green, well we like to call the Candy Covered Books, have been flooding the fiction shelves of our local bookstores. Now Chick Lit comes from all countries around the world. In fact, consider Chick Lit a sub category of the larger 'woman's fiction'. Here we have a young female protagonist ranging from mid-twenties to early thirties, looking for love. Typically in a larger city, typically waiting for something better out of life, typically getting it. As indicated by the up growth in subgenre, its clear that Chick Lit is no longer restricted to its conventional definition. The common thread across the genre is a writing filled with wit, tinged with self-deprecating humor, but mainly dealing with topics that a modern woman can identify with. Through our newsletters, we hope to highlight these subgenres for you. For more info on Chick Lit, check out what the Chick Lit authors have to say at Chick Lit Authors Roundtable and another excellent article from The Guardian.
